The Invitation (2015)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (1)

Run Time: 1 hr 40 min | Director: Karyn Kusama

Cast: Logan Marshall-Green, Tammy Blanchard, Michiel Huisman Emayatzy Corinealdi, Lindsay Burdge, Michelle Krusiec, Mike Doyle, Jay Larson, John Carroll Lynch

If you’re in the mood for a horror movie that will really mess you up but not in a super graphic way, then The Invitation is the film for you. The story begins simple enough: a man (Logan Marshall-Green) brings his girlfriend to a dinner party arranged by his ex-wife, which reunites a group of old friends. But soon things turn a bit…strange when the host (Tammy Blanchard) begins espousing about a group she and her new beau (Haunting of Hill House’s Michiel Huisman) have joined. This is a contained horror film that plays heavily on psychological and emotional trauma as opposed to jump scares for blood spurts, and it’s all the better for it. Director Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body) shows a masterful handle on tone and tension, and the story will keep you guessing right up until the jaw-dropping final shot. – Adam Chitwood

Revealer (2022)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (2)

Run Time: 1 hr 26 min | Director: Luke Boyce

Cast: Caito Aase, Shaina Schrooten, Bishop Stevens

Revealer is a 1980s-set campy, gory slasher flick starring Caito Aase and Shaina Schrooten as a stripper and religious protester, respectively, who find themselves relying on each other to survive the apocalypse. With a clever pairing of opposites, especially trapped in a peep show booth, Revealer plays with unique scenarios that lead the plot into a supernatural realm. Directed by Luke Boyce, who co-wrote the film with Michael Moreci and Tim Seeley, Revealer leans heavily into 80s electro-synthwave style nostalgia wrapped around spiritual and philosophically grounded dialogue. Revealer has a killer soundtrack and is an unexpected hidden gem. – Yael Tygiel

Flux Gourmet (2022)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (3)

Run Time: 1 hr 51 min | Director: Peter Strickland

Cast: Asa Butterfield, Gwendoline Christie, Fatma Mohamed

Flux Gourmet is truly a bizarre, one-of-a-kind movie from acclaimed British writer/director Peter Strickland. Strickland’s canny eye and compilation of unique talents, including Asa Butterfield (Sex Education) and Gwendoline Christie (The Sandman), is nearly overshadowed by the immense sensory overload that is Flux Gourmet. Wrapped around a story of power struggles and bureaucratic politics and intertwined with artistry and egos, Flux Gourmet is set in an institute for the culinary arts and performances. Strickland’s cacophony blends discomfort, hilarity, and horror – as well as a pinch of gastrointestinal disorders – forming a monstrosity of cinematic originality. – Yael Tygiel

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (4)
(Video) Top 10 Scariest Movies You Can Stream on Shudder

Run Time: 1 hr 31 min | Director: Chloe Okuno

Cast: Maika Monroe, Karl Glusman, Burn Gorman

More than the traditional suspenseful horror flick, Watcher follows a young woman who suspects their new neighbor is spying on her and her husband, eventually believing he may also be a serial killer. Starring Maika Monroe and Karl Glusman as Julia and Francis, Watcher is a nail-biting thriller that trades twists and turns for pulse-pounding tension. Monroe’s performance is magnetic, having her transition from a quiet strength to a terrified fierceness within the same scene. Director Chloe Okuna’s unique perspective and stylish eye provide a distinct tone to Watcher, producing a positively gripping psychological thriller. – Yael Tygiel

What Josiah Saw (2021)

Run Time: 2 hrs | Director: Vincent Grashaw

Cast: Robert Patrick, Nick Stahl, Scott Haze, Kelli Garner

What Josiah Saw is a modern American Gothic horror film starring Robert Patrick (Peacemaker) and Nick Stahl (Fear The Walking Dead). Robert Alan Dilts’s intriguing script is directed by Vincent Grashaw, and the two make for a compelling combination, as Grashaw’s use of shadows and suspense brings an unsettling story to life. Although the faces in this film are quite familiar, these performances feel uniquely creepy in ways audiences have not seen from these actors before. What Josiah Saw is a haunting experience for any horror fan. – Yael Tygiel

The Clovehitch Killer (2018)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (8)

Run Time: 1 hr 49 min | Director: Duncan Skiles

Cast: Dylan McDermott, Charlie Plummer, Samantha Mathis, Madisen Beaty

There’s a reason they say you shouldn’t go snooping around your parents’ stuff — you never know what you’ll find, and it could lead to trauma. But some kids can’t help themselves. The Clovehitch Killer focuses on 16-year-old Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer), who finds a bunch of disturbing (for lack of a better word) photos in his father’s possession and starts suspecting him. Talk about skeletons in the closet! What ensues is a series of terrifying incidents, and Tyler believes that his father could have been the person behind a series of murders that took place in his town of Clarksville, Kentucky, many years ago.

The movie was inspired by the real-life story of Dennis Rader, aka the BTK Killer, who was charged with the murder of 10 women across Kansas. It’s dark, devilish, and a slow burn, so brace yourself.

The Babadook (2014)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (9)

Run Time: 1 hr 33 min | Director: Jennifer Kent

Cast: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall

A modern horror masterpiece that finds as much terror in its visuals as it does its crushing emotional encapsulation of loss, Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook is as good as you have heard and then some. It centers on a single mother (Essie Davis) and her troubled son (Noah Wiseman), whose home becomes a place of terror when a mysterious creature sets up shop there. An embodiment of both grief and fear, it lingers over the house in every single shot. Even in the quiet moments, you feel completely blown away by the growing sense of dread and devastation that threatens to consume the family. Both performances are outstanding, giving the characters a real sense of humanity as they face greater horror. There is just so much to love about every single aspect of what The Babadook manages to achieve, becoming a brutal yet beautiful look at what it takes to recover from losing those you love. It remains one of the most affecting and arresting works of horror in recent memory, making it a must-see for anyone who considers themselves even a passing fan of the genre. - Chase Hutchinson

When travel bloggers Claire (Sara Canning) and Teddy (Oscric Chau) have the opportunity to stay at a remote five-star Airbnb with incredible reviews, they jump at the chance. They’ve been losing followers and need something big to revitalize their brand. Teddy sees this as the perfect opportunity to propose to Claire for love and extra views. However, Claire, unaware of Teddy’s plan, decides to exploit their eccentric host Rebecca (Gracie Gillam) for content. During their stay, Rebecca’s behavior becomes more and more unhinged. She shows up unannounced and is way too eager to help them out with every little thing. Claire insists that the “crazy superhost” will make them go viral again, but Teddy isn’t so quick to make a potential enemy out of their host. Superhost is an interesting take on influencer culture that has plenty of tension leading up to the final moments. Is Rebecca just incredibly passionate about her rental business, or is something more sinister going on? - Brynna Arens

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (11)

Run Time: 1 hr 38 min | Director: Ruggero Deodato

Cast: Robert Kerman, Carl Gabriel Yorke, Francesca Ciardi, Luca Barbareschi ,Perry Pirkanen

Described by many as one of the most disturbing films of all time, it certainly isn't for the squeamish or faint-of-heart. The first, true "found footage" film, Cannibal Holocaust follows a group of researchers who go into the Amazon, seeking a documentary crew that went missing. What they find instead is their footage, and it is far worse than anyone could have imagined. Not only is the documentary crew eaten by the titular cannibals, they stage many of their setpieces, proving that they are the true "savages." Be prepared for real animal deaths, and scenes of rape and torture. The film was so brutal, director Ruggero Deodato was arrested for making a snuff film. He had to produce his actors in court in order to prove his innocence. -- Alyse Wax

(Video) 10 Best Movies on Shudder | Ghost Pirate Entertainment

Run Time: 1 hr 17 min | Director: Elza Kephart

Cast: Romane Denis, Brett Donahue, Sehar Bhojani, Stephen Bogaert

I have a weird obsession with inanimate objects that become killers, and Slaxx is as good as it gets. A pair of jeans becomes possessed and starts killing employees at a fast-fashion store that claims to have high ethical standards. They don't, obviously, and the jeans are pissed about that. The social commentary is a little heavy-handed, but the kills are so fun, you won't care. Plus, at a tight 77 minutes, it doesn't have anything unnecessary. -- Alyse Wax

Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street (2019)

Run Time: 1 hr 39 min | Director: Roman Chimienti, Tyler Jensen

Cast: Mark Patton, Robert Englund, Jack Sholder, David Chaskin, Kim Myers, Robert Rusler, Marshall Bell, Clu Gulager, Joann Willett

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2 was considered a huge disappointment by many fans of the franchise, especially after the brilliance of the original. But what many people didn't realize (many being me, a straight girl barely into double digits when I saw the movie) was that it was "the gayest horror film ever made." Of course, not on purpose, and certainly not overtly. Scream, Queen! is a brilliant documentary that explains why NOES 2 was so "gay," and focuses on Mark Patton, the star of the film who was himself a closeted gay actor, and how the film ruined his career. -- Alyse Wax

La Llorona (2019)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (14)

Run Time: 1 hr 37 min | Director: Jayro Bustamante

Cast: María Mercedes Coroy

Shudder's first Oscar nominee, La Llorona, probably isn't the jump-scare fright fest you're expecting if you're thinking about its Conjuring-verse cousin, The Curse of La Llorona. What it is, is a heartrending slow-burn horror that's as much Gothic tragedy as it is a ghost story. Jayro Bustamente painstakingly unfolds the story of former Guatemalan dictator Enrique (Julio Diaz), confined to his home—along with his long-suffering family—while on trial for genocide. As the sickly war criminal starts to hear the sounds of a weeping woman echo through the halls at night, the screams of protestors batter the windows outside during the day. La Llorona is the type of film where you don't notice you've been holding your breath until the credits roll, and while it does build to a devastating crescendo, the justice served is also deeply cathartic.

Hell House, LLC (2015)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (15)

Run Time: 1 hr 23 min | Director: Stephen Cognetti

Cast: Ryan Jennifer, Danny Bellini, Gore Abrams, Jared Hacker, Adam Schneider, Alice Bahlke

Found footage gets a bad wrap, but a well-crafted entry can still leave you shaking more than the camera. Exhibit A: Hell House, LLC a wickedly clever little horrorshow written and directed by Stephen Cognetti. The film works as a faux-documentary covering a horrific event that happened inside of a Halloween haunted house maze in rural Rockland County, New York. The movie then works backward, showing you how a hopeful crew of young haunted house creatives brought their work to the abandoned Abbadon Hotel, where the scares they're cooking up can't compare to the odd phenomena that keeps happening after work hours. Hell House, LLC isn't free of jump scares—the ones it does employ pack one heck of a punch—but it doesn't rely on them, instead building the kind of dread that can only come when you know these characters are doomed from the start. Don't look too hard at the clown in the corner. --Vinnie Mancuso

(Video) 10 F*#King Underrated Gems Horror Movies on Shudder!

Cast: Cathy Podewell, Amelia Kinkade, Linnea Quigley, Hal Havins, William Gallo, Alvin Alexis

It should be written down in stone that no Halloween party is complete without Night of the Demons. Hell, director Kevin S. Tenney's supernatural splatterfest is a Halloween party. The film sees a group of hard-partying high schoolers celebrating October 31st by heading to an abandoned funeral parlor for an All Hallow's Eve rager. But a mid-party seance actually does unleash the unruly demon trapped in the basement crematorium, who possesses the partiers one by one and kicks off a night of blood, guts, and aggressively demon-possessed dancing. Night of the Demons is a dripping, oozing blast that holds up the same way all classic 1980s effects features should, equal parts delightfully cheesy and impressively gruesome. Kick up the jams and have yourself a night. --Vinnie Mancuso

The Endless (2017)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (17)

Run Time: 1 hr 51 min | Director: Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead

Cast: Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead, Callie Hernandez, Tate Ellington, Lew Temple, James Jordan

Wanna' get trippy? Look no further than The Endless, hotshot horror directing duo Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson's descent into cosmic, Lovecraftian terror that'll leave your head spinning. Two brothers, Justin (Benson) and Aaron (Moorhead), return to the UFO cult they escaped from years prior to discover things aren't as frightening as older sibling Justin might remember. But something's definitely off—no one has aged a day since they left, for instance—and soon it becomes apparent that everything out in this isolated desert commune happens under the watchful eye of a malevolent, all-powerful something that's been trapping humans inside pockets of time-loops since the dawn of time. The Endless is a trip, featuring carefully crafted moments of sci-fi horror that will, uh, be stuck in a loop in your head, endlessly. --Vinnie Mancuso

V/H/S 94 (2021)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (18)

Run Time: 1 hr 40 min | Director: Simon Barrett, Steven Kostanski, Chloe Okuno, Ryan Prows, Jennifer Reeder, Timo Tjahjanto

Cast: Anna Hopkins , Christian Potenza, Kyal Legend, Devin Chin-Cheong, Christian Lloyd, Thomas Mitchell Barnet, Kimmy Choi, Nicolette Pearse

The deeply terrifying anthology V/H/S series is back and ready to party like it's 1994. (Please be advised, "party" in this case refers mostly to horrific mad scientist experiments and urban legends who live in the sewer.) V/H/S 94 is a return to form for the series, featuring five new grainy bits of horror directed by franchise alums Simon Barrett and Timo Tjahjanto along with newcomers Jennifer Reeder, Chloe Okuno, and Ryan Prows. Like every horror anthology in history, V/H/S 94 varies in quality, but the highs are some of the scariest pieces of filmmaking the franchise has ever seen. That includes Tjahjanto's "The Subject," a deeply demented descent into sci-fi horror action that could easily sustain its own feature film. As is, it's still arguably one of the best horror movies of the year. --Vinnie Mancuso

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (19)

Run Time: 1 hr 36 min | Director: James Signorelli

Cast: Cassandra Peterson, W. Morgan Sheppard, Daniel Greene, Jeff Conaway, Susan Kellermann, Edie McClurg

Hopefully, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark landing on Shudder means a whole new generation is introduced to a B-movie icon. When the TV horror hostess Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) quits her job in LA, she sets out to small-town Massachusetts to claim the house left by her late great-aunt Morgana (Tress MacNeille). Unfortunately, the uptight residents of Fallwell are simply scandalized by the sudden appearance of a woman who loves horror flicks, deep necklines, and double entendres in equal measure, a situation that devolves into a full-on witch hunt. Gloriously campy, purposely schlocky, and punk rock at its core, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark is about as required viewing as its gets. --Vinnie Mancuso

Scare Me (2020)

The Best Movies on Shudder Right Now (20)

Run Time: 1 hr 44 min | Director: Josh Ruben

Cast: Aya Cash, Josh Ruben, Rebecca Drysdale, Chris Redd

(Video) Best Of Shudder August 2022

I mean, why would you even be here if you didn't want a well-told spine-chiller? Writer/director Josh Ruben playfully boils the genre down with Scream-like efficiency in horror-comedy Scare Me, which traps struggling writer Fred (Ruben) and acclaimed zombie novelist Fanny (Aya Cash) in a classic cabin in the woods during a classic dark and stormy night. With nothing to do, the two storytellers take turns spinning spooky yarns with only one goal: "Scare me." Both Ruben and Cash dive the hell in to these performances, combining the best of live performance, physical comedy, and improv to keep your eyes glues to what's basically your friend telling campfire tales. (The movie only grows more entertaining when SNL member Chris Redd joins the fray as a pizza deliveryman pulled into the shenanigans.) An all-timer of a hangout-horror movie, Scare Me has a ton of fun poking at the tropes while remembering why tropes exist in the first place. --Vinnie Mancuso
